Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is a pat-a-cake?
A: A pat-a-cake is a ceramic plaque that displays the impression of your little ones' hand and/or foot. Each pat-a-cake begins with your child's hand or foot gently pressed into soft, cool clay. Each one is carefully hand-finished and painted in a color of your choice. They are then kiln-fired twice for lasting durability to be treasured forever.
Q: How can I get a pat-a-cake?
A: There are three ways you can have a pat-a-cake made:
1) Come to one of our retail shows in D.C. or Maryland. Check our Upcoming Events for locations, dates and times. Email or call us to make a reservation.
2) We will come to you if you can organize a group of friends with an order of ten (10) pat-a-cakes or more. The organizer will receive 10% off his or her order.
3) If no event is scheduled, please contact us and we will arrange a mutually convenient time for you to come to one of our home studios.
Q: How long does it take?
A: It takes only about 15 minutes to fill out an order form, choose paint colors and take the impression. Taking the actual impression is quick and only takes a moment or two. Please dress your baby in clothing where hands and feet are easily accessed and try to have your baby well-rested and fed. Because each pat-a-cake is custom made and hand-finished, it will take approximately 8-10 weeks for the final product to be ready.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: Prices vary depending on the style. Prices start at just $25 for a single baby handprint, up to $65 for a sibling triple. Check the Descriptions and Pricing page for details. Payment is due in full at the initial pressing and we can only accept cash and checks. Sorry, we cannot take credit cards.
Q: Do you have gift certificates?
A: Absolutely! A pat-a-cakes gift certificate makes a wonderful baby shower gift for that special mom-to-be. A pat-a-cake is a gift that will be treasured for a lifetime, whatever the occasion.
Q: What colors can I choose from?
A: You may select any combination from our color palette below. The handwriting is sometimes difficult to see with lighter colors, so a complimentary darker color is suggested.
Pink Rose Baby Blue Green Cranberry True Blue Purple Red Dark Blue Turquoise Apple Light Blue Chestnut Bright Yellow Buttercream Black
Q: What happens if my pat-a-cake is damaged?
A: While your pat-a-cake is much more durable than plaster, it can still break, just as a ceramic plate can break. Clay and glazes can be unpredictable sometimes. In the event that your pat-a-cake has an imperfection caused by clay or glaze abnormalities, kiln malfunction or even breakage, you may request a full refund or we can take your child's impression(s) again free of charge.
